Anyway, the deCordova Museum and Sculpture Park out of Lincoln, MA commissioned me to photograph an installation for them earlier last year. A bit different than what I am used to shooting but it’s nice to step outside of that and do something a little different. I’m just now getting to upload the printed materials from the shoot. Here is the cover and a spread from the catalogue.

It was November 1st. The plan was to take an overnight train to Lao Cai (then drive to Sa Pa) from Hanoi. It was a 9 hour ride and it was a damn bumpy one. We had to walk through what seemed like the beginning of a horror movie train yard until we got to the actual train we were riding on. Equipped with A/C, my own little reading lamp and a non-functioning TV, I was excited about it all – regardless. I didn’t sleep all too well on the way there, partially because I woke up due to the silence from the train stopping.

That freaked the hell out of all us who were in the room, about 4-5 years ago – kids used to throw rocks at the windows and hijack the trains for peoples’ belongings and money. It was 2am, it was quiet and it was dark – I glance out the window to see two flashlight beams shining around, I think ‘Oh shit..’. We were stopped for about an hour and a half, no idea what was going on – I lay back down only because I know they’ve upgraded security on those trains since the hijackings but you can’t not think about those things when you’re actually there. I fall back asleep only to wake up to a knock on the door a few hours later, a lady working on the train serves us coffee. I go to the grab a cup of coffee (hot coffee, mind you) and nearly spill the scorching crap all over her. The cups, not mugs, cups..were cheap plastic Dixie cup kind of cups, you know – the kind of cups you use to rinse your mouth out at the dentist. None the less, underestimating the fragility of these cups – I squeezed a bit too hard and sent a few drips of coffee onto our friendly lady and her tray.

Pleasant wake-up, fail. Chào mừng đến với Lào cai và chào buổi sáng. OR ‘Welcome to Lao Cai and good morning.’

And two actual NON-Point and Shoot photographs from the train.

So, it’s been a long time – I get it. Reason being is that I was away for the last 3 weeks traveling overseas. I have film to be developed and emails to be sent so here is a brief post. Where did I go you ask? I was in Vietnam not only in the South where my parents are from but exploring all over the North. That said, I bought a polaroid camera last minute to give photographs as thank-you’s to people who allowed me to photograph them. Here are some that didn’t get given away.

Here is the first installment, more later.

That said, I woke up this morning, checked my phone and was greeted by a drawing from Vaughn in my email inbox. Being half awake, I think I fell back asleep for a few minutes and dreamed that my 7 did in fact grow a pair of legs and said ‘Toldey!’. Toldey, by the way is my screenname, who is on aim these days right? more than you imagine if you don’t use it actually – but if you’re ever on, send me a friendly hello.

Okay, quick post! Earlier this year and late last Summer, I worked with owner and founder of Go GaGa, Jill Cartwright and Art Director and Head Honcho of Alphabet Arm Design, Aaron Belyea – to create the marketing and packaging material for Go GaGa. Go GaGa produces stylish and ergonomic bags for the everyday commuter and/or new parent with the ideas of real life use aka ‘stylish, ergonomic, eco-friendly and best of all, comfortable to carry’. (Did I make this sound okay Jill?) That said, working with 2-3 families, we set out to gather some imagery for the packaging. We shot all around Boston, from JP to the South End, from beautiful warm sunny mornings to frigid cold winter afternoons. Both Jill and Aaron were a blast to work with on these shoots and I couldn’t be happier to see that the bags made their way into Whole Foods. Thanks you two. Not all the images are mine but I’m happy to see a few that made the cut on the bands that wrap the bags.

Here are some outtakes from last and this year’s shoot and a photo of the display at Whole Foods.
